Leonardo DiCaprio’s 104-Acre Blackadore Caye Eco-Resort in Belize

Discovering Blackadore Caye

Actor and sustainability advocate Leonardo DiCaprio first discovered Blackadore Caye during a vacation in 2005 while staying at the luxurious Cayo Espanto resort.

In 2014, he purchased the 104-acre island in Belize for $1.75 million with Jeff Gram, the owner of Cayo Espanto.

The island lies about a 45-minute boat ride from Belize’s airport, near San Pedro.

Addressing Environmental Challenges

Over the years, Blackadore Caye has suffered from deforestation and coastal erosion of its native mangroves.

DiCaprio aims to reverse this damage while developing a sustainable resort community.

The project includes measures such as constructing man-made reefs and restoring mangrove habitats to rehabilitate the island’s ecosystem.

This is crucial for Belize, which boasts the world’s second-largest reef system.

Collaboration with Paul Scialla and Delos

Teaming up with Paul Scialla, CEO of the New York City-based development firm Delos, DiCaprio envisions a resort that not only cares for the ecosystem but also offers luxurious, sustainable living.

Scialla, known for his health-focused developments, brings his expertise to this project.

Notably, he developed a condominium in Manhattan, where the penthouse sold for nearly $40 million.

Key Features

Sustainable Development

Residential development on Blackadore Caye features 48 eco-friendly homes priced between $5 and $15 million.

These homes are built sustainably with a zero carbon footprint, integrating advanced health amenities tested by Delos, such as LED lighting and advanced air quality systems.

Moreover, the resort is designed to restore the island’s natural habitat by replanting mangroves, developing artificial reefs, and using native species.

Luxury Amenities

The resort features luxury villas and overwater bungalows that offer privacy, comfort, and stunning views of the Caribbean Sea.

Additionally, the amenities include wellness centers, yoga pavilions, and spa facilities that promote health and well-being.

As a private island resort, Blackadore Caye also offers an exclusive and secluded experience for guests.

Furthermore, guests can expect high-end services, including gourmet dining, personalized wellness programs, and various water sports and recreational activities.

Cutting-edge Design and Environmental Restoration

Led by Jason F. McLennan, the founder of the Living Building Challenge, the architectural design of the Blackadore Caye Eco-Resort embodies cutting-edge principles and innovative practices.

The resort, which first welcomed guests in 2018, strictly adheres to the rigorous standards of the Living Building Challenge.

This makes it the first resort of its kind to meet such stringent sustainability criteria, showcasing a perfect blend of luxurious living and environmental restoration.

In addition, the resort supports various conservation programs, including research and educational initiatives focused on marine life and coastal ecosystems.

Community Involvement

The project collaborates with local communities and aims to create jobs and opportunities for local residents.
